MAX BECKMAN  (art short)

If you like your art to see life through rose-colored glasses, the works of Max Beckman may not be your thing.

Beckman’s experience as a medic during World War I led him to portray the violence and conflict of postwar German with a unique style that combined intense color, angular and flattened forms, and bold gestural outlines. His apocalyptic perspective on current events and psychological issues of the day are brutally honest and strangely beautiful.

See the first American comprehensive retrospective of the artist’s work since 1984 at the MoMA QNS. The exhibit includes paintings, sculptures and drawings by an artist who – although he never professed a particular style or school – made a profound mark on war-era painting, and whose impact can still be seen on the painters of today.

COTTAGE FEVER  (travel short)

Once upon a time, before drive-up motels and Naugahyde sofas were born, cottage colonies were the most personal and prevalent lodgings available on Cape Cod. Now, though a dying breed, there are still a few clusters of cabins that haven’t been banished to condo purgatory.

Cottage Grove is one such rare collection of cottages, a bed and breakfast that maintains every drop of retro charm while pampering guests with every contemporary comfort.

Tucked away in Eastham on the Outer Cape, Cottage Grove is like a four-star summer camp for grown-ups. Innkeepers Greg Wolfe and Chris Nagle have lovingly refurbished the eight nestling cottages without stripping a smidge of authentic flavor. Rustic exposed-beam construction and warm knotty pine interiors outfitted with down pillows and duvets, antique furnishings and modern textiles as well as TV/DVD and data ports (if you absolutely must).

Greg and Chris have created an unparalleled experience for honeymooners and adventurers as well as small group retreats – the hub of the Grove is an amazing breakfast room slash meeting house dressed in rich leathers and aged soapstone, where guests can relax, share stories, and start the day energized.

Cottage Grove’s primo location is near 30 miles of pristine beaches, biking and hiking paths, mouthwatering seafood spots and quaint seaside nooks. The only amenity it doesn’t offer is a pool, but guests won’t miss a thing. After all, a dip in the Atlantic or the Cape Cod Bay is right around the corner.
